15  Ways To Prevent Falling at Home

 

  1. Clean up clutter around the house.
  2. Repair or remove tripping hazards.
  3. Use a Cane or Walker to steady yourself when getting up or walking.
  4. Wear rubber-soled low heeled shoes. Avoid socks on stairs or waxed floors.
  5. Hold handrails when you use the stairs or install a stairlift.
  6. Avoid loose clothing that bunches up or drags on the ground.
  7. Light areas of the home adequately.
  8. Don’t stand on chairs to reach items on tall shelves.
  9. Use non-slip mats in bathrooms and showers.
  10. Use grab bars, raised toilet seats and transfer benches to reduce falls in bathrooms.
  11. Move more carefully around the home. Do not rush or move quickly.
  12. Regular exercise can help reduce the chance of a fall.
  13. Take care of your overall health.
  14. Have vision and hearing tested often.
