A typical Sterling installation requires only three plates to be mounted to the treads of the stairs. Most other stairlifts require at least four.

Notice that the aluminum rail is just slightly wider than the width of your hand, and that it mounts just a few inches from the wall.

This unit is positioned slightly "up" from the bottom of the stairs in order to provide more clearance into the adjoining room.
